A community based solution arises

The pollution of plastic in the harbour and surrounding areas has been identified as a serious detrimental environmental threat to the village. A team of local volunteers has established a non profit organisation (NPO 243517), appropriately named JUNKSTARS

Our vision

Junk Swop Trash Alter Refashion Support (Junk STARS) presents an effective and sustainable recycling model whilst making a contribution to alleviating poverty. We aim to give communities a sense of pride and dignity, and a resource to support and feed their families in a dignified manner.

In addition, we strive to preserve the environment for residents and visitors and also protect threatened marine life.

Our mission

Our mission is to:

  • Significantly reduce pollution and help alleviate poverty in Hout Bay.
  • Reward children and adults with basic foods, toiletries, clothing and toys in return for collecting and handing in recyclable waste.
  • Expand the operation to other areas in Hout Bay and also introduce the concept to the rest of the country.
